  • Superintendent’s Message 2019-2020

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  We’ve missed you, and hope that you enjoyed a restful summer break. Our administrators, teachers and staff have been busy preparing clean, safe, and inviting environments designed to motivate and engage your students in many learning opportunities and activities that will support a successful and fun school year.

This year our District Theme is 2020 Vision:  Creating Bright Futures.  On August 9, 2019, all Selma Unified staff participated in our annual Back to School Kick-Off event, which was designed to ensure that we all know our district priorities, and focused on the fact that our students are our greatest resource.  On this day, we reiterated that each staff member plays a significant role in contributing to the success of our students.  We know that each of our students holds great promise and potential, and it is our responsibility to assist them in developing their knowledge and skills to reach this potential.

This year, we will continue to focus on improving school discipline, safety, school climate and culture in each of our schools.  We know that when students have clear rules and expectations, along with kind and caring adults that they can relate to on campus, they thrive and learn better.  To support our efforts in this area, we are very fortunate to partner with the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, and Fresno County Behavioral Health to provide additional support in every school, for students who may benefit from counseling or socio-emotional support.  We know that needing these services can have an impact on how well students learn and interact with others.

As we look at our overall program, students in Selma Unified continue to demonstrate Triple A (AAA) growth in Academics, the Arts, and Athletics.  In Academics, we continue to demonstrate growth in English Language Arts and Math, providing academic support and interventions to students with demonstrated need. Additionally, we are fully committed to ensuring that students learn in 21st Century environments that include providing technological tools they deserve, to enhance their lessons and learning.  We have maintained funding for our programs in the Arts, Music -you will see our Black Bear Brigade proudly wearing new uniforms this year, Dance - new attire for Los Paisanos, and Athletics - our stadium is scheduled for a November opening with many features including new restrooms, a new weight room and equipment, and a new concession stand.

As we continue on our educational journey this year, I invite you to join us in partnership in any way that is most comfortable for you.  In the words of Oprah Winfrey, “Education is the key to unlocking the world ...a passport to Freedom.”  I know that by working together with 2020 Vision, we will support our students in Creating Bright Futures, that will surely unlock the world to them.
